Experts in the dairy, wine, beer and
beverage industries.
About
We know our industries like we know steel. With decades of experience supporting New Zealand’s dairy, wine and broader food and beverage sectors, our specialised expertise now sits together under Tīra. What began as NDA Engineering and Crown, serving world-class dairy and wine producers respectively, has evolved into a unified capability supporting a wide range of process industries.
From farm to factory, vineyard to production line, we understand the unique challenges of handling, processing and transporting sensitive products. That knowledge, combined with deep engineering capability, allows us to design and deliver solutions that perform reliably in demanding environments.
Whatever the application, we take pride in bringing steel to life – delivering quality, precision and innovation every step of the way.
What we offer
We design, engineer and manufacture high-quality steel processing, storage and transport solutions tailored to the needs of dairy, wine, beverage and related industries.
From concept through to installation and refurbishment, we provide a complete, end-to-end service built on technical expertise and a reputation for reliability. Whether it’s new equipment, upgrades to existing assets, or complex site work, we deliver with care, precision and consistency.

Case Studies
Central Transport – innovation by the truckload
The Brief
New Zealand dairy company, Miraka, needed to collect and transport large volumes of milk safely and efficiently from farm to factory – for processing at their state-of-the-art facility at Mokai, Central North Island.
The Issues
Transport is not Miraka’s core business, so transport and logistics company, Central Transport Ltd (CTL) was contracted to manage the logistics of efficiently collecting and transporting this valuable commodity from 104 local farms. This required specialised equipment to collect milk from farms, transport and deliver it safely, while complying with stringent food safety requirements.
The Solution
Tīra worked collaboratively with the CTL team to develop and deliver milk transport truck and trailer units specific to their needs to meet the high standards demanded by Miraka.
Our design included innovative features such as the drop belly, centre draining trailer unit, which allows for lower COG and enhances trailer performance and safety. The truck units were equipped with the latest technology in milk metering and sampling systems, ensuring full traceability of product from farm to factory.
Fonterra New Zealand – transport that performs all the way
The Brief
As New Zealand’s largest milk supplier, Fonterra have an ongoing requirement for safe, efficient transportation of milk from farm to factory, or between their various processing plants.
The Issues
Fonterra’s requirements are very specific; an immense amount of valuable milk has to travel for long distances on rural roads, so its transportation units need to be up to the task.
The Solution
Over the years, Tīra has worked collaboratively with Fonterra to develop a design for its milk transport units that meet its particular needs. We’ve developed innovative features such as the ‘drop belly’ and the centre-draining trailer unit, which allows for lower COG and enhances trailer performance and safety.
A very big cheese – innovation for the US market
The Brief
Tīra was engaged by IDS to manufacture an eight-tonne-per-hour CheddarMaster™ cheese machine for delivery to Mullins Cheese in Mosinee, Wisconsin, USA.
The Issues
Fully assembled, the CheddarMaster™ machine was nearly 40 metres long, 6.2 metres wide and nearly 9 metres at its highest point, requiring fabrication and transport in three separate sections and final assembly on site. The machine needed to be manufactured to meet stringent USDA requirements.
The Solution
Tīra worked closely with the IDS design team to develop practical, innovative and efficient fabrication details as part of the manufacturing methodology. Tīra’s significant workshop capacity and resources meant the machine could be fabricated in separate sections and pre-assembled in the workshop – before dismantling and packaging for shipping to the USA. Attention to detail and our excellent quality systems ensured we could meet all requirements of the USDA quality standards.
Getting Marlborough’s wineries back to business
The Brief
New Zealand’s 2016 seismic event caused extensive damage to Marlborough’s award-winning wine industry, with processing facilities and product storage severely compromised.
The Issues
With just four months until the 2017 harvest, infrastructure needed to be repaired – and in many cases replaced – so that Marlborough’s wineries could complete their harvest.
The Solution
We adopted a multi-pronged approach. Firstly, we developed an efficient tank design that could be transported across New Zealand, maximising Tīra’s capacity and the capacity of the wider industry. Secondly, temporary high bays were erected at wineries to allow large volume tanks to be base replaced on site. And thirdly, multiple site crews were deployed to reinstate damaged tanks, catwalks, and pipe work – work completed in time for the annual harvest.
Improving Marisco’s process from vine to wine
The Brief
Award-winning Marlborough wine producer, Marisco Wines, were looking for a safe, efficient way to receive grapes from truck and trailer units for processing.
The Issues
Marisco were specific that they wanted a receival bin that was capable of continuous feed of product, along with minimal maceration of fruit and ease of use – as well as peace of mind that it would endure in New Zealand conditions.
The Solution
Tīra designed a robust, user-friendly bin that fitted Marisco’s needs and operated efficiently in any conditions. The design eliminated any need for hydraulic fluids to ensure zero contamination of product. The bin was also fitted with the latest design in load cell mounts, preventing any uplift in a seismic event.
Taking cladding to our customers
The Brief
With wineries moving to be more environmentally sustainable, and a drive for more concise temperature controls during fermentation/cold stabilization, retro fitting of insulation to fermentation and blending vessels is an obvious step.
The Issues
Many of these tanks are too large or are in a position in the winery that makes it uneconomic to remove from site and bring back to the workshop to clad. Access by scaffold or EWP’s is often hampered by a lack of clear access. A method of retro fitting cladding in a safe and efficient manor was required.
The Solution
Tīra developed and refined a rope access solution that allowed for cladding to be positioned and fastened in situ, which means we can offer a robust solution for both aluminium and stainless steel cladding that won’t slip or drop. Dozens of tanks have now been fitted across several wineries with good aesthetic appeal.
Bragato case study
The Brief
To support the Bragato Research Institute to develop a world class research facility in Marlborough focused on delivering solutions and keeping the NZ wine industry at the cutting edge.
The Issues
A bespoke build with flexibility built into the vessels which allows an easy switch between ferments of 7l through to 200l, while still utilising the same vessels across red and white grape varieties.
The Solution
Always keen on a challenge Tīra went to the next level and made a significant financially contributed as founding sponsors. From here we designed prototypes and worked closely with the project team to develop world class research equipment for a world class facility.
