Taking Spiral welding to Texas
The Brief
Our USA client required 2 million gallons of milk and hygienic storage, for a green field dairy in Texas. The 14 insulated dairy silos, ranged in size from 75,000 to 235,000 gallons and had to be built and installed in a 14-month window. The brief included supply and install of silos, agitator, alcoves, ladders and platforms.
The Issues
The silos were up to 28′ in diameter and therefore too large to transport on the road requiring the silos to be site/field erected. Using conventional site tank building methods, a build of this size would take over 2 years.
The Solution
Tīra designed a new site spiral welding machine that could automatically weld and polish internal weld seams to 32 Ra and insulate and spiral clad a silo in the vertical as build position. Tīra built and shipped this machine to the USA and trained a US crew to operate it. The Tīra team worked closely with the main contractor to ensure the silos and alcoves were constructed and installed to the client and USDA requirements.
Riverview LLP - world's largest milk silos
The Brief
Tīra Stainless was engaged by Riverview LLP to design and build milk storage silos for their new 4 million pound per day milk powder factory in Morris, Minnesota. As a large-scale dairy producer, their storage requirements were significant, totalling 2 million gallons of hygienic storage capacity.
The Issues
The challenge was to build and install eight of the world’s largest dairy silos within an eight-month construction window. Each silo had a capacity of 250,000 gallons (945,000 litres) and measured 29 feet in diameter and 60 feet in height. These dimensions exceeded road transport limits, requiring the silos to be built on site.
Each silo also required:
- 3-A certification
- Stainless steel cladding with 3 inches of insulation
- Multiple agitators, nozzles and instrument ports all contained in a large stainless steel insulated 16’ x 10’ alcove
The Solution
Tīra’s cutting-edge automated spiral welder. This technology enabled each silo to be formed, welded, polished, insulated and clad in a vertical orientation, adjacent to its foundation.
